MAGIC WEEK IN CYPRUS

Since 2006, the Medieval Festival in Ayia Napa began. In October, joy and admiration reign here for a whole week to the splendor of gold in the evening lights …

Who said a time machine does not exist ?!

On the streets of Ayia Napa, our fantasy starts it … Oh, how many unknown, unsolved, incomprehensible keep the Middle Ages. The festival in Ayia Napa with a gust of sea wind brings us the sensations of those distant times … Mystery, magic, mysticism … Here everything was mixed in the cycle of carnival fun …

According to one version, the word carnival comes from the Latin phrase with arrus navalis , which means “wagon-ship . ” And, indeed, the bright carnival procession is very reminiscent of a huge ship elongated in length, slowly sailing along the Ayia Napa bridge …

EXTREME MASKS

The procession is led by mysterious silhouettes in exquisite masks by skilled craftsmen. Volta replaces Baut, Dama and many other varieties of the most popular masks of the Venetian carnival. Each luxurious in its own way … Admiring yourself, you peer at them with interest, trying to unravel the secret hidden under an elegant overlay …

It must have opened a portal from which magicians and sorcerers, knights and troubadours, noble ladies and seigneurs of the Middle Ages poured into Ayia Napa. Their clothes, customs, habits are fundamentally different from each other. And how else, because this period spans ten centuries. Oh, so much has changed over these centuries: and this whole motley company of representatives of such a huge time interval is before us in all its splendor.

We see mysterious ladies and gentlemen. They used to indulge in secret delights under cover of night – in this the mask was their reliable ally.

But here the picture is fundamentally changing: before us is the indomitable ferocity of the barbarian tribe. The march continues with warriors who have nothing to hide, accustomed to openly enslave peoples with an open face …

CHARACTER OF MOVEMENT

Ayia Napa’s main street, leading from the harbor to the city center, shimmers with hundreds of vibrant colors. Street musicians play beautiful medieval music on the lutes, flutes, bagpipes … Marvelous maidens must be floating under its sound, they must be sorceresses, with their smooth movements, probably performing some kind of magical ritual.

Behind them is a new miracle: giant majestic birds. The graceful flapping of their wings captivates …

And here are the ballerinas. Girls dancing on stilts. And you wonder how these gentle creatures manage to maintain their balance on a rough cobblestone pavement …

FIRE DIVO

Finally, medieval fakirs. Despising danger, playfully juggling fire, they cause exclamations of amazement from admiring spectators.

But whose sinister silhouette is seen in the carnival procession? Has the dragon himself granted a feast? Is he here of his own free will? No. He was brought to the amusement of the crowd.

The captive dragon seemed to submit to fate, but this is only the first impression. Here he spreads his wings and, oh, watch out for the random rotos. At any moment, a fire-breathing monster will soar into the sky and flush everyone and everything with a flame. In the meantime, he himself, like the audience around him, is completely fascinated by the magic of carnival …

BANNERS RISE

The procession freezes from time to time, but for what? To once again impress the audience with an unforgettable sight. Under the drum roll, the banners simultaneously take off. After a moment, they are skillfully picked up by dexterous standard-bearers. Just a moment and the flags again rush up, decorating the night sky with banners fluttering in the wind.

In the central square, the fantastic carnival characters say goodbye to Ayia Napa. Another moment and they will disappear in the magic portal of time. But no one is sad, because exactly one year later the fairy tale will come to life again. The heroes of the next festival will again bewitch, captivate and fascinate …

The medieval festival is a good tradition, which Ayia Napa is very proud of. From year to year, the organizers put in it both the soul and the heart.  This time, the festival was attended by street theatre artists from Greece, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Holland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Belarus, Romania, France and Cyprus.

Near the Ayia Napa church, built in the 14th century and almost having lost its original appearance since then, numerous performances are being played, craft workshops and exhibitions are working. Here you can try to sculpt pots yourself, weave baskets, as well as see the history of glorious Ayia Napa in graphic and pictorial images with your own eyes.

What is left for us? “Say goodbye to the 14th Ayia Napa Medieval Festival. “See you soon, the new 15th!” You will be as bright, magical and, of course, unpredictable. Looking forward to seeing you! ”
